To start, just a bit about me. My name is Jonathan Scourfield and I'm a social work academic in Cardiff University. For those reading this from outside the UK, Cardiff is the capital city of Wales, one of the four nations of the UK and definitely not in England. Before I came to university work in 1996 I taught history in a comprehensive school, was a group worker in a drug rehab and then worked as a probation officer in the South Wales valleys. But I've been an academic much longer now than I've been anything else. I teach social work and my research has been on a number of things, including child welfare, children's identities and suicide. But I've kept up an interest throughout all this in working with men; an interest which began when I was a practitioner. The page on 'previous research' has some things I've written on the subject. I'm a father myself to three children aged 16, 12 and 7.
The point of the website is to make links between research and practice. I'd like to share some information with people who work with fathers and I would love some input from practitioners to help keep my research relevant. So feel free to comment on this blog and / or email me your thoughts: [email protected].
